Young people in Poplar Grove are preparing for the future by learning about the past. The Youth Exploring Aviation group is studying aviation by restoring a pre-War light airplane.

A group of Aviation Explorers at Chicago Executive Airport spent Columbus Day cleaning up the skies, or at least some of the things that fly there. Over a dozen Explorers and their adult leaders were treated to a day of exceptionally fine weather for their annual plane wash.

The recent Aviation Career Expo (ACE) provided Chicago area youth the opportunity to investigate a wide variety of aviation career options offered by leading colleges and universities, flight schools and the military. ACE was hosted by Chicago Executive Airport (KPWK) on Saturday September 17.

The Air Classics Museum of Aviation held its annual Open House on June 18, 2011. Besides their static warbirds, visitors were treated to the museum's great exhibits as well as a variety of interesting speakers.

As I've mentioned in previous entries, much of the value of the small aviation museums is their ability to focus on subjects that often get lost in the larger, broader presentations. Air Classics is no exception.

When aviation enthusiasts think about air museums, they usually consider the “big guns” like the National Air and Space Museum in DC or the Air Force Museum in Dayton. All too often, they forget about the smaller museums closer to home.
